CANTON, Ohio – The Fairmont State men's and women's swim teams wrapped up competition at the GMAC/MEC Swimming Championships with a pair of championship victories in the 1650 freestyle event.
Zsofi Bevardi won the women's 1650 with a time of 17:26.31, while
Ricard Castan was victorious in the men's 1650 with a time of 16:41.06.
Josep Castan and
Chris Hoover also finished in the top-10 of the men's 1650 by finishing eighth and ninth, respectively.
In the men's 200 backstroke
Pedro Gaspar and Castan both qualified for the A-final. Gaspar finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:58.27, while Castan came in seventh with a time of 1:58.88. In the women's 200 backstroke, Lexi Antol led the Falcons by qualifying for the B-final with a time of 2:12.46.
Later in the evening, both
Majester Abdul-Jalil and
Tyler Virtue earned a trip to the podium in the men's 200 breaststoke. Abdul-Jalil finished third in the event with a time of 2:04.54, while Virtue came in seventh after turning in a time of 2:09.91.
Nathan Harvey also qualified for the B-final in the event.
In the final individual event of the day,
Kayla Fogle and Castan led the Fairmont State women and men by qualifying for the B-final in the 200 butterfly. In addition,
Nathan Fubio and
Tyler Virtue each qualified for the B-final in the men's 100 freestyle.
In the final relay of the four-day championship event, the Fairmont State men came in third place in the 200 free relay with a time of 3:12.09. The Fairmont State women came in eighth in the women's 200 free relay.
In the final event standings at the GMAC/MEC Swimming Championships, the Falcon men came in fourth place overall – turning in the second-highest point total by a MEC program behind Notre Dame College.
In the final event standings on the women's side, the Falcons came in ninth place overall, the sixth-best finish by a Mountain East Conference program.
