Men's Basketball Preview: Concord, Glenville State & Shippensburg

The Fairmont State men's basketball team (5-1, 3-1 Mountain East Conference) will play three games in a week beginning on Tuesday (Dec. 6) when the Falcons trek to southern West Virginia for a road conference dual between Concord. The Fighting Falcons return to Joe Retton Arena on Saturday (Dec. 10) for a matchup versus Glenville State at 4 p.m. On Dec. 13, Fairmont State returns to the road for a non-conference game at Shippensburg at 7 p.m.
 
Fighting Falcons Facts
  • On Nov. 30, the Fighting Falcons handled Charleston, 74-61, and picked up their third conference victory of the season. Fairmont State dropped its first game of the season on Saturday (Dec. 3), falling to No. 25 West Virginia State 101-99 in overtime.
  • The Falcons rank in the top 10 in scoring offense (6th) and steals per game (8th). Fairmont State averages 92.2 points per game and 11.5 steals per game.
  • Fairmont State enters this week at the top of the conference in field goal percentage (50.2%) and rebound margin (8.0).
  • Fairmont State was ranked 12th in the NABC National Coaches' Poll on Nov. 29. The Falcons appeared on the D2SIDA Men's Basketball National Poll and were ranked No. 15 in the nation on Nov. 29.
  • The Falcons checked in at No. 5 in the D2SIDA Men's Basketball Atlantic Regional rankings released on Dec. 5.
  • Isaiah Sanders leads the conference in three-point percentage and three-pointers per game. Sanders has made 51.2% of his shots beyond the arc and averages 3.50 three-pointers per game. His three-point percentage is the ninth-highest out of all Division II scorers.
  • On Nov. 30 versus Charleston, Sanders passed Ted Darcus for 28th on the school's all-time scoring leaders list. Sanders has totaled 1,590 points during his career in Fairmont. Darcus was inducted into the Fairmont State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. Sanders' streak of scoring in double figures concluded in Wednesday night's game. The Sicklerville, N.J. native completed a 65-game stretch in which he tallied double digits in points. The last time Sanders was held to under double figures was on Feb. 5, 2020, versus Glenville State.
  • Fonz Hale led the Fighting Falcons in scoring at West Virginia State. Hale shot 8-of-13 from the field and hit four triples. Hale's 31 assists rank fourth in the conference.
  • Lima, Ohio native George Mangas has reached double figures in his last four games. Mangas led all scorers on Nov. 30 versus Charleston with 19 points and netted 16 points at WVSU.
  • Senior guard Zyon Dobbs has recorded 10 steals this season. Sanders (13), Hale (10) and Dobbs (10) all have reached double-figures in the steals category this season.
  • Newcomer Tariq Woody has averaged 10.8 points per game off the bench. Woody collected his first double-double as a Falcon on Nov. 22 at West Virginia Wesleyan when he finished with 13 points and 10 boards.
  • Seth Younkin has swatted five blocks and leads the Falcons. Younkin snagged his 500th career rebound on Nov. 19 at Davis & Elkins.
  • David Jolinder eclipsed double figures in points for the third time this season on Dec. 3 at WVSU. Jolinder finished with 10 points and pulled down four rebounds.
  • Fairmont State head coach Tim Koenig enters his fourth season in charge of the men's basketball team. Koenig has won 66 games during his time in Fairmont.
 
Scouting Concord
The Mountain Lions enter this week on a three-game winning streak. The winning streak began when CU defeated Ohio Dominican in 2OT in Columbus on Nov. 28. The Mountain Lions won both of their MEC contests to close out the week, defeating Alderson Broaddus and Notre Dame (Ohio). Concord is 5-3 overall and has split its first four MEC contests.
 
Concord racks up an average of 44.12 rebounds per game, which is the fourth-highest average in the nation and the highest mark in the MEC. Lual Rahama is the team's leading rebounder and has totaled 71 boards in eight games played. Six Mountain Lions have more than 30 total rebounds. Rahama is Concord's leading scorer and averages 16.6 points per game.
 
Head coach Todd May begins his seventh season at the helm of Concord men's basketball. The Circleville High School alum amassed a 101-24 record at Columbus State Community College prior to accepting the head position at Concord. The Mountain Lions have a record of 88-81 under his direction.
 
Scouting Glenville State
Glenville State is coming off a 41-point rout of Alderson Broaddus for the Pioneers' first MEC win of the season. Before squaring off versus the Fighting Falcons, GSU is scheduled to play at Bluefield State on Monday (Dec. 5) and return home to face Frostburg State on Wednesday (Dec. 7).
 
The Pioneers crash the offensive glass at the best rate in the conference and average 15.0 offensive rebounds per game. Jordan Smith's 22 steals are the third-highest total in the country. Smith leads the MEC in steals and steals per game (3.14). Freddie Word has averaged 2.57 steals per game, which is the third-highest average in the conference. Smith's 17.9 points per game is the highest average of any GSU player.
 
Justin Caldwell returns as the head coach for GSU men's basketball. Caldwell logged playing time at West Virginia Wesleyan and Glenville State before beginning his coaching career.
 
Scouting Shippensburg
The Raiders have won three-straight games after knocking off Bowie State, California (Pa.) and Slippery Rock. Shippensburg does not have a game scheduled until it plays Fairmont State on Dec. 13.
 
Three Raiders average more than 15 points per game. Rashon Johnson leads the team with 16.6 points per game, while Carlos Carter and Dom Sleva both average 15.3 points per game. Sleva, a 6-6 forward from McKees Rocks, Pa., has racked up five double-doubles in seven games, which is the highest total in the nation. Sleva scored 25 points and tracked down 13 rebounds at Virginia State on Nov. 12. 
 
The Raiders are coached by Chris Fite, who is in his 10th season leading Shippensburg men's basketball. Fite led Shippensburg to three NCAA Tournament appearances and guided the Raiders to a 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament Championship.

Fairmont State will play three games prior to the holiday break. The Fighting Falcons will host Felician on Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. and will play Penn State Greater Allegheny on Dec. 18 at noon from Joe Retton Arena. Fairmont State has an exhibition game scheduled at Division I Bowling Green on Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. in Ohio.
