FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University wrestling team competed at the NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Championships inside of Joe Retton Arena. The Falcons made program history as
Colton Stoneking and
Austin Gibson qualified for the NCAA National Tournament.
It is the first time in program history that the Falcons have had two wrestlers qualify for the national tournament in the same year.
Colton Stoneking's day started off with a bye before taking down Ben Makaritis of East Stroudsburg via technical fall, 19-3. In the semifinals, Stoneking battled Caleb Chaves as the two went back-and-forth but as time ran out, Stoneking won 5-4 with the winning point coming from riding time.
In the championship bout, Stoneking faced Nicholas Cottone of Millersville. Already winning the first matchup of these two, Stoneking was looking to continue his incredible year. The junior from Waynesburg, Pennsylvania did just that with a 15-2 major decision win to claim the 141-pound title to advance to the NCAA National Championships.
For
Austin Gibson, the day kicked off with a 15-0 tech fall over Seton Hill's Troy McClelland. In the quarters, Gibson continued his run with a 9-0 major decision over Owen Koch of Shippensburg. He then battled Noah Gnibus in the semifinals with a chance to clinch national qualifier status. Unfortunately, Gibson fell in the hard fought battle, 11-7.
Now in the consolation bracket, Gibson faced Cole Dubois of Millersville and easily advanced thanks to a 15-1 major decision. The third and fourth place match pit Gibson and Jackson Mackleman of American International College with a chance to go to the NCAA National Championships. Trailing 5-3 with just seconds left in the third period, Gibson was able to make one last push and record a takedown to claim the win, 6-5, and punch his ticket to the national tournament.
The two Falcons will now compete at NCAA Division II National Championships on Friday, March 14 through Saturday, March 15 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
