HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The 13th-ranked Fairmont State University men's tennis team delivered a strong overall performance, sweeping the doubles competition and securing four singles victories to defeat Newberry College, 5-2.
The Falcons set the tone early by dominating all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles,
Kusunoki Haruto and
Noah Liedtke controlled the match from the start, earning a 6–2 win over Newberry's Daniel Watson and Lucas Mruk. The duo of
Keagan Karungagaran and
Gabriel Masu followed with a solid 6–3 victory at No. 2 doubles against Senthen Reddy and Sohei Kamiyama. Fairmont completed the doubles sweep at No. 3, where
Mohamed El Helaly and
Gustavo Masu secured a 6–3 win over Martin Posada Garcia and Noel Bartz.
In singles play, Newberry picked up wins at the top two positions, but the Falcons responded with four straight victories to seal the match. Haruto earned a convincing 6–2, 6–2 win at No. 3 singles over Martin Posada Garcia, while
Gabriel Masu was dominant at No. 4 singles with a 6–1, 6–1 result against Sohei Kamiyama.
Mohamed El Helaly added another point for Fairmont State at No. 5 singles, defeating Noel Bartz 6–3, 6–1. The match at No. 6 singles proved to be the most competitive of the day, where
Jacob Smolder battled through two tight sets to defeat Lucas Mruk 7–5, 7–5 and close out the Falcons' victory.
Fairmont State (6-1) will face the University of Mount Olive in the final match from South Carolina on Thursday, March 12. Match time is set for 12:30 p.m.
