CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Fairmont State University men's tennis team faced the University of Charleston in the MEC Championship for the fourth-straight year. The Falcons unfortunately fell to the Golden Eagles, 4-1.
Charleston claimed the early momentum by securing the doubles point. The Golden Eagles took victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, while the No. 2 match—featuring Fairmont State's tandem of
Gabriel Masu and Keagan Karunagaran—was left unfinished with the Falcons holding a narrow 5-4 edge.
In singles play, Fairmont State battled but couldn't overcome Charleston's depth at the top of the lineup. Haruto Kusunoki dropped the No. 1 match in straight sets, followed by a tightly contested loss from
Gabriel Masu at No. 2 that included a second-set tiebreak.
The Falcons showed resilience in the middle of the lineup, highlighted by Mohamed Mostafa Moens earning a strong 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles—Fairmont State's lone point of the match.
Several other matches were left unfinished as the team fight remained evident. Karunagaran forced a third set at No. 3 and was leading late, while
Noah Liedtke also pushed his opponent deep into a third set at No. 4 before play was halted.
Fairmont State will now await the selection show for the 2026 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship. The show starts at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, May 4.
