HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The 13th-ranked Fairmont State University men's tennis team battled the University of Mount Olive in its final match in South Carolina. The Falcons used a strong performance in doubles and key singles victories to earn a hard-fought win over the Trojans, 4-2.
Fairmont State seized early momentum by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At No. 1, the Falcons' duo of
Kusunoki Haruto and
Noah Liedtke edged Kristoffer Dalbak and Bram Poel in a tight 7–6 (7–5) battle.
The No. 2 pair of
Keagan Karungagaran and
Gabriel Masu matched that result with another 7–6 (7–5) win against Niklas Gruenefeldt and Rasmus Grindheim to secure the early point for the Falcons. Mount Olive picked up the remaining doubles match at No. 3 as Philip Peter Carstensen and Luke Oosthuizen defeated
Mohamed El Helaly and
Gustavo Masu 6–3.
In singles play, Fairmont State delivered several clutch performances to maintain the advantage. Haruto dominated his match at No. 2 singles, defeating Poel 6–1, 6–1. At No. 4,
Gabriel Masu battled through a three-set contest, defeating Grindheim 6–2, 0–6, 10–8.
Another dramatic finish came at No. 5 singles where El Helaly rolled through the opening set before surviving a tiebreak loss in the second and closing out Carstensen in the match tiebreak, 6–0, 6–7 (6–8), 10–8.
Mount Olive earned singles wins at the top and third courts. Dalbak defeated Liedtke 6–2, 6–2 at No. 1, while Gruenefeldt topped Karungagaran 6–3, 6–2 at No. 3.
The No. 6 singles match between
Jasper de Bruijn and Oosthuizen was abandoned.
Fairmont State (7-1) makes its way back home to face Bloomsburg University on Sunday, March 15. Start time from campus is set for 3:00 p.m.
