BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University men's tennis team opened Mountain East Conference play against West Virginia Wesleyan. The Falcons fell to the Bobcats, 4-3.
In doubles action, the Falcons secured two of the three points to take early momentum. The duo of
Keagan Karungagaran and
Gabriel Masu delivered a solid 6-3 win at No. 2, while
Mohamed El Helaly and
Gustavo Masu were dominant at No. 3 with a 6-2 victory.
Kusunoki Haruto and
Noah Liedtke battled in a tight No. 1 matchup but came up just short in a 7-5 decision.
Transitioning into singles, Fairmont State saw standout performances despite Wesleyan gaining the upper hand overall. Haruto led the charge at the top spot, rallying after dropping the first set to earn a gritty 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 comeback win.
Gabriel Masu also impressed at No. 3, controlling his match and closing it out in straight sets.
The remaining singles matches proved to be tightly contested, with several going the distance. El Helaly pushed his opponent to three sets at No. 5, while
Jasper de Bruijn fought through a marathon match at No. 6 that included a tiebreak opening set before falling 7-5 in the third.
Fairmont State (10-2, 0-1) welcomes West Virginia State University to campus on Saturday, April 4. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
