FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University men's tennis team welcomed West Virginia State University to campus on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons claimed the victory over the Yellow Jackets, 5-2.
The Falcons came out sharp in doubles, taking all three matches to grab early control of the contest.
Kusunoki Haruto and
Noah Liedtke set the tone with a 6-4 win at No. 1, while the duo of
Keagan Karungagaran and
Gabriel Masu followed with a 6-3 victory at No. 2.
Mohamed El Helaly and
Gustavo Masu completed the sweep at No. 3, battling to a 7-6 win to give Fairmont a commanding advantage heading into singles.
In singles, Fairmont continued to deliver in key moments, winning four of the six matches to seal the team victory.
Haruto led the way at the top of the lineup, grinding out a three-set win at No. 1, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Gabriel Masu earned a solid straight-sets victory at No. 3, while Karungagaran showed resilience at No. 4, bouncing back after dropping the first set to claim a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win. El Helaly added another point with a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 5.
West Virginia State picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, but the Falcons' depth and early doubles dominance proved to be the difference.
Fairmont State (11-2) hosts Salem University on Wednesday, April 8. Match time is set for 3:00 p.m.
