FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Fairmont State University women's soccer team will host the Mountain East Conference Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday, November 16.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment for our team and university to be hosting the MEC Championship," said
Greg Bamberger, Director of Athletics. "Our team has had an amazing season so far and we look forward to it hopefully continuing."
This is the first time since the team started competing at the NCAA Division II level that it will be hosting a conference championship. Additionally, it is the team's second appearance in the MEC Title match with the first occurring in 2019.
The women's soccer team has set a program record with its most wins in a single season with 15, surpassing the previous mark of 13. On Wednesday, the newest NCAA Regional Rankings were released with the Falcons sitting at eighth in the Atlantic Region.
The Falcons entered the MEC Women's Soccer Tournament as the number one-seed from the North Division after claiming the Division Title. They had seven all-conference winners including the Defensive Player of the Year,
Filippa Stalhammar, and the Coach of the Year,
Kernell Borneo.
Fairmont State will face the University of Charleston for the conference championship on Duvall-Rosier Field at 1:00 p.m. Earlier in the season, the two teams met on the same pitch with the Falcons emerging with the 3-1 victory on October 15.
