Bill is remembered as one of the most accomplished divers in Fairmont State history, excelling on both the conference and national stages during his career from 1984–1988. A two-time NAIA National Champion in the 3-Meter Dive (1986, 1988), Cushing established himself as a dominant force in the pool. He was a four-time conference champion on both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter boards and served as team captain during his senior season in 1987–88.

Cushing’s consistency was unmatched, as he placed at the NAIA National Championships in each of his four years of competition. On the 1-Meter board, he recorded finishes of 11th (1985), 2nd (1986), and back-to-back 3rd-place performances in 1987 and 1988. On the 3-Meter, he added an 8th-place finish in 1985 and a runner-up showing in 1987 to go along with his two national titles.
