Lou Geary was a four-year letterwinner as a member of the Fairmont State football team and a two-year letterwinner on the Falcon wrestling team. He earned All-America and first team All-WVIAC honors as an offensive lineman on Fairmont State's WVIAC Championship team in 1979. That season, the Falcons went 9-1 and picked up a 14-13 victory over West Virginia State in the Coal Bowl Game.

Following his standout career as a multi-sport athlete, Geary coached wrestling, football and track and field for 30 years in high school and college – winning numerous conference championships and receiving Coach of the Year honors 10 times. He also coached in the WVIAC and was named Coach of the Year for Glenville State cross country and track and field in 1986. He was also a 1993 inductee in the Brooke High School Hall of Fame and won a West Virginia state wrestling championship in 1976.
