Balog enjoyed a standout career in the pool for the Falcons from 1990-94, becoming a 17-time NAIA All-American and a national qualifier in each of his three seasons at Fairmont State. His 1994 NAIA Championships performance included runner-up finishes in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, along with a sixth-place finish in the 100 freestyle.

Balog helped guide Fairmont State to a ninth-place team finish at the 1994 NAIA Championships, marking the program’s first top-10 finish since the 1987-88 season. His school-record times in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke stood for 11 and 22 years, respectively, and both remain among the top marks in program history.
