Kerr’s legacy at Fairmont State spans football, wrestling, education and mentorship. A graduate of East Fairmont High School and Fairmont State College, Kerr served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before beginning a distinguished career in education and coaching in Marion County.
Kerr returned to Fairmont State in 1963 as an assistant football coach under legendary head coach Deacon Duvall and as head wrestling coach. He played a key role in the Falcons’ 1967 National Championship football team, helped develop numerous All-Americans and All-Conference players, and coached future NFL draft selections Jim Mertens and Matt Fortier.
Kerr later became head football coach in 1971 and led Fairmont State to back-to-back WVIAC Football Championships in 1973 and 1974. He retired from coaching and teaching in 1979 after a career marked by athletic success, academic excellence and service to Fairmont State. In 2010, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to the sport.
